Upon my first visit to Charleston, as an artist with Beverly Sills' New York City Opera, I was amazed that a city so incredibly rich in beauty, history and cultural diversity was without a prominent opera company of its own. Twenty-six years later, the challenge of producing such a company has been embraced! Welcome to Opera Charleston, a company founded on the belief that a new arts venture in 21st century America must fit a dynamic artistic vision to its community, audience and artists. More than simply producing great opera, Opera Charleston's purpose is to create a rewarding and challenging experience that resounds with the entire community. Although we are presenting world-class artists and extraordinary music to Charleston, it is the remarkable cultural diversity of Charleston and its surrounding communities that will make Opera Charleston unique and special.
